I Hope For More Nuanced Characters For Women: Rasika Dugal

Actress Rasika Dugal has spoken out about the problem of zero acknowledgement of women as sexual beings in Indian cinema, and has revealed that she hopes for more nuanced characters for them in forthcoming films.

"There is hardly ever an acknowledgement of women as sexual beings in our cinema. Women are either shown as objects of titillation or sympathy and I think we need to change that conversation and that gaze. I hope that with better writing and more sensitivity, we can have more nuanced and interesting roles for women," Rasika explained in a statement. The 33-year-old has been working on and will soon be seen in Amazon Prime’s original upcoming series Mirzapur. She will be seen playing the role of Pankaj Tripathi’s Kaleen Bhaiya’s wife, Beena. Her role is that of a sexually liberated lady who is stuck in an unsatisfactory marriage.

Rasika stars alongside stars such as Ali Fazal and Shweta Tripathi. The executive producers are Farhan and Ritesh Sidhwarni, while the show has been created by Karan Anshuman and Puneet Krishna. It is helmed by Gurmmeet Singh. Rasika will next be seen in an upcoming film titles Hamid, which is to be directed by Aijaz Khan. Set in Kashmir, Rasika will be seen as a widow and mother of a young boy.
