The spirit of colours brings a lot of joy and positivity into our lives, and Holi is definitely
a day to rejoice. Regarded as the “festival of colours” or “festival of love,” Holi is a unique celebration of high spirits that brings people together.
This auspicious festival falls on the full moon that comes in Phalguna – between February and March – which marks the end of the winter and the coming of spring. It is also a time when nature wears new colours and greets the bright sun, signifying the celebration of new life.
Observed for centuries, Holi celebrations and traditions are many, and so are the stories! The origin of this festival dates back to ancient mythology. The most popular legend associates the celebration of Holi with the demon ruler Hiranyakashyap. According to folklore, everybody in his kingdom obeyed his orders and worshipped him. However, to his disappointment, his son Prahlad was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu and refused to worship him. After several failed attempts to kill Prahlad, Hiranyakashyap ordered his sister, Holika, to lure Prahlad onto a pyre to burn him to death. The legend says as Holika entered the fire with Prahlad, she had to pay for all her sins by sacrificing her life. Prahlad came out unharmed as he was chanting the name of Lord Vishnu. Thus, Holi, derived from Holika, is denoted as the festival of victory of good over evil.
The traditional Hindu festival is a fun affair and is observed for two days. Although the whole city wears a festive look, the traditions and celebrations differ from family to family. Each community observes this festival in its own manner, with unique rituals.
