Maharshi is one of the most anticipated films of this year as it is Mahesh Babu’s 25th movie. Directed by Vamshi Paididipally of ‘Oopiri’ fame, this big budget film is produced by three bigwigs in the Tollywood industry¬ — Dil Raju, Ashwini Dutt and PVP.
The film starts off with Rishi (Mahesh Babu) taking over as the CEO of a New York-based company. Coming from a middle class family, his goal is to be one of the most successful people in the world. One day, he meets his college friends and goes on a trip down memory lane. We learn that Ravi (Allari Naresh) and Pooja (Pooja Hegde) were his best friends. After graduation, they go their separate ways but Ravi’s whereabouts are unknown. Once Rishi finds out about Ravi, he travels to India for him. What Ravi does to Rishi, why Rishi goes in search of him and what happens thereafter forms the crux of the story.
The first half focusses on their college days and is decently entertaining. The second half rides high on emotion and is a drag. The director does not use logic when it comes down to details. With a degree in M.Tech, Rishi gets an offer of multiple crores in his campus interview. As the CEO, it is surprising that he is allowed to take leave for months, conduct meetings in a village and be embroiled in controversies on national news, every day. There are more such flaws and the lack of research here is pretty sad!
Mahesh Babu looks his best yet again and carries the film on his shoulders. Naresh's character is one of the most well-written characters, and it is his role that drives the story forward. Pooja Hegde looks gorgeous but has nothing to do in the movie. The music by Devi Sri Prasad is forgettable although he does a good job with the background score. Like some of Mahesh Babu’s previous films, even this one is based on a social cause i.e the importance of farmers. All flaws aside, the speech on farmers and the importance of their contribution to the nation will make you want to applaud, whistle and salute a farmer the next time you see one.
Maharshi talks about the transformation of a man and his values but the plot is lost somewhere and the film focusses on idolizing the actor. It is understandable though, since he would love for his fans to enjoy his 25th film. Unfortunately, in that process, Maharshi becomes a marathon of his previous movies, making it insanely lengthy! But, if you are a fan, you might enjoy it!
