South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 87 runs in the warm up match. The South African batsmen were a notch above with nine of their batsmen surpassing double figures. Hashim Amla 65 off 61 balls, captain Faf du Plessis 88 off 69 balls and cameos from Andile Phehlukwayo and Chris Morris led the team to put up 338 runs.
Andile Phehlukwayo added 4 wickets to his kitty and ensured a victory in spite of fifties from Dimuth Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews.
Dimuth Karunaratne's selection in Sri Lanka's World Cup squad had raised enough questions. However, he proved his worth with a 92-ball 87 that consisted of 12 boundaries. Meanwhile Sri Lanka's persistence with spin paid off when Jeevan Mendis had Amla bowled a googly in the 24th over and three balls later they sent Faf du Plessis back to the dressing room. Soon, Sri Lanka shortened their lengths, choking the flow of runs that gave Sri Lanka some breathing space but Morris took South Africa to a total that Sri Lanka simply was not good enough to chase.
It is too soon to form an opinion about the Sri Lankan squad, so let us wait and watch to see what they will put up in the weeks that follow.
